Maker Lesson Plan

Star Circuits
This week, we were to create a lesson plan using our maker kits. Star Circuits is the name of my lesson. In this lesson, my students will bring their own drawing to life with circuit stickers. The idea was to create the lesson that you would teach to your current class. I am currently a 1st-grade teacher, so I came up with a lesson that my first-grade students would be capable of creating. The maker kit I used for this lesson was circuit stickers, something fun my students would love.
The overview of my lesson is the incorporation of Science, Reading/Writing, and circuits. The moon is our topic of study in Science. Students are aware of the different aspects of the moon as well as the sun. This lesson will allow students to show what they have been learning by drawing the night sky. This is a two-day lesson. On day 1 of Star Circuits, students will listen to a story about the moon and stars, called Fancy Nancy Sees Stars. After hearing the story, students will create a picture of the night sky that Fancy Nancy sees. This connects to their learning in Science. On day 2, students will make their drawings come to life by adding a circuit sticker. We will discuss what a circuit is as well as connect circuits to everyday life. Students will work in small groups with me to create their circuit stickers.
It is important for this lesson to be done over two days because each day the focus is different. On the first day, students keep their focus on their knowledge about the moon and stars with what we have learned in science. On the second day, the focus turns into a technology lesson about circuit stickers. This allows the students to stay focused on each concept and allows me to assess their learning each day.
Materials needed for this activity are:
Fancy Nancy Sees Stars book (day 1 & 2)
white cardstock (day 1)
crayons (day 1)
scrapbook tape (day 2)
Copper tape (day 2)
scissors (day 2)
pencils (day 2)
lithium battery (day 2)
example of drawing (day 2)
Below is the step by step, day two, pictures. Please read my Star Circuits lesson plan that goes into detail about the entire lesson.
